I returned to it over the years, but between other projects and life’s little curveballs, I never got anywhere near a completed version. As expected, it didn’t go well and the idea of translating the game to Portuguese seemed like a distant thing. I began this translation project in 2002, at a time I knew nothing about romhacking. Of all the home releases, the Super Nintendo is the best: rich visuals, arcade-like gameplay, and a vibrating soundtrack. The videogame adaptation skips on the drama and focuses on the spectacular dogfights of the series over Aslan’s skies, against everything from mercenary squadrons to land carriers. Area 88 is the name of the airbase from which Shin, Mickey, Greg, and other pilots take off, killing to survive another day. The manga details Shin and other pilots’ ferocious air combat, along with the drama of being at the frontlines of a war. It tells the tale of Shin Kazama, a young and brilliant pilot tricked into enlisting in the air force of the Kingdom of Aslan, which is in the middle of a bloody civil war. Squadron is a home conversion of the arcade original, itself based on Kaoru Shintani’s Area 88 manga, published between 19.
